Last year, we celebrated Martin Luther and the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. This year we are celebrating Luther’s wife Katerina (Katie) Von Bora. Not only did Katie run a guest house (in the monastery), take care of the farm, tend the cattle, drive the wagon, manage the household finances and support her husband’s quest for change…she BREWED BEER! And quite well, as history tells us.
Therefore, we raise a glass for Katie and celebrate her tenacious and entrepreneurial spirit!
Microbrews for Martha & Mary honors the important role of Poulsbo’s pioneering Lutherans. They saw the need for and build and orphanage, establishing Martha & Mary Children’s Home in 1891. From those beginnings Martha & Mary now serves children and seniors all across Kitsap County. It is the fifth largest private employer in the county and the only non-profit long-term care provider serving low income seniors. Martha & Mary serves 750 children and more than 1000 seniors and older adults, plus their families, annually, at 15 different sites throughout Kitsap County.
